Roger Goodell More Powerful than Johnny Law

I can’t for the life of me understand why NFL CommissionerRoger Goodell is able to suspend NFL players for legal infractions for which they’ve already been punished by the authorities. Michael Vick served nearly 2 years in jail for his dog fighting conviction and was released from prison two weeks ago. Vick served his time, and now, in the eyes of the law, is a free man.

So how can Goodell justify the fact that he suspended Vick for the first 6 games of the 2009 NFL season? Even if Goodell felt that Vick’s stint in federal prison was too lenient of a sentence, how can he believe that he’s more powerful than the courts and can therefore tack on more punishment? He's simply Vick's boss and shouldn't be able to wield any more authority than our court system. Vick needs to appeal his suspension immediately.
